Fehling’s A Reagent – Scientific Description
Fehling’s A Reagent is an aqueous solution of copper(II) sulfate, stabilised with dilute sulfuric acid, and used in combination with Fehling’s B Reagent for the qualitative detection of reducing sugars. The reagent provides a stable source of Cu²⁺ ions, which are reduced to cuprous oxide (Cu₂O) in alkaline conditions, producing a characteristic brick-red precipitate. It is widely employed in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, food analysis, and teaching laboratories.
